Lan Biying  Lijiang Culture and Art Union

Cities are the most beautiful, advanced, profound and complicated products created by the human being. In particular, the municipal square is a window for understanding ethnic culture, witnessing the change and development of the local ethnic group , and experiencing the ethnic groups’ folk customs. A city is the sediments of the history and it contains each historical period’s mark.

Through the two experiences of designing the cultural landscapes of Lijiang municipal square and “Memory Heritage Park” in the new Yulong County , the author provides the reader some thoughts on expression of a city’s specific characteristics. Starting from the following four points, including “Understanding the city”, “knowing the city”,  “identifying the city”; and “expression of the city”, the author deeply digs out the historical values and aesthetic significance of a city based on the unique local culture and the historical literatures. This article intends to encourage people’s enthusiasm in understanding of Lijiang and promoting of the local specific cultures so as to express its “soul”.
